HCBC BC Equine Economic Study

The Horse Council of BC (HCBC) has over 23,700 registered members and over 20,000 households in the province are involved in the equine industry.

According to a 2019 HCBC study, the estimated capital value of the 57,580 horses in British Columbia is just under half a billion dollars ($480 million). The HCBC study also reveals that the equine industry in our province continues to have an impressive economic impact:

• Over $784 million in economic activity
• Nearly $64 million in Government tax
• Over $1.67 billion in equipment and farm structures used for horses

Over $34 million is related to employment income, with 5,620 full-time equivalent jobs. Only 15% of the equine jobs were held by farriers and equine veterinarians. A third of those FTE jobs are for training horses and riders, many of whom own and use Maverick horse trailers.

Recreation makes up about 54% of the equine industry and about 46% of the economic impact. Racing was next with 22% of the industry and about 31% of the economic impact. The remaining 22% was split between Sport (18%) and Ranch/Guide work (5%).
